As the the economy seems to be bumping along the bottom of recovery, Vertu (the mobile communication company) has found their niche, it’s in the production of luxury goods.

This British firm has just developed a smart phone that costs in the region of £7000 which is being targeted at the luxury market.

Never heard of Vertu? Well, this British company actually employs over 1,000 people in Hampshire and their latest phone is called the “Ti”. It actually used to part of Nokia until it was sold to private equity firm EQT last year. The phone claims to have a virtually scratch-proof screen (similar to guerilla glass) and a  specially-tuned “symphonic sound”.

So, what makes this smartphone so expensive? Well, for starters, it is built from a  a screen made of sapphire (which is few stages down from a diamond) and is surrounded by a titanium-case.

Chief executive Perry Oosting told Sky News: “This is a new category, if you compare to a lot of other luxury categories that are established, so we are still at the beginning stage.

He added: “Today we do up to almost £300m in revenue so in a way we have created a new segmentation in a relatively new category.”

Mr Oosting also said that sales mainly come from Asia, adding: “From a demographic point of view, our customers are mainly male, and Asia is an important market.

“Europe is our second market, main cities are London, Paris, Milan and the third is eastern Europe together with the Middle East.”

Vertu’s turnover is growing and the trend is expected to continue in 2013

I set up Hot Deals Monster because I was frustrated with the lack of deals specifically targeted to Men. I wasn't interested in cheap nappies or 10p off my next box of cornflakes. I wanted real, interesting deals that would genuinely help and save money for the male consumer.
